Work Out Harder and Hire Fit People

by admin on March 30, 2011

If you’re not currently setting goals to be in better shape, you know what you need to do.

Trust me – your back problems and evolving double chin will disappear faster than you think.

Ya I just don’t have time to work out.” Neither does Barack Obama, but he’s hard in the gym for an hour in the morning, 6 days a week.

Don’t you hate it when I’m right?

Also, when recruiting, look for athletes and hire people who play sports actively.

Look for team players.  Look for those with athletic goals as adults.  Those who wake up working out hard will work hard in their jobs.  Those who sit on the couch watching TV that makes them dumber will produce similar results at work.

  1. It’s great to know that President Obama (at least aims) to workout daily. There is so much research to support the idea that working out regularly can actually improve one’s ability to think clearer. Personally, I know that I am much better (all-around) when I am working out regularly. And when I say workout, I am mainly referring to cardiovascular exercise.

  2. Cameron, I think you’re bang on with most of this.

I think the best performers and most ambitious folks are those with athletic prowess, but there’s a cultural component, too. I think you can hire non-athletes without sacrificing quality depending on how the organization is shaped.

That said, if you want people to be at their best mentally, physical activity and fitness are key. I’m not at my best right now because I used to be insecure. I worked ALL THE DAMN TIME (for someone else, no less). Since working on my own, I’ve gained a new self-respect that’s paying off for my clients, but my previous employer definitely didn’t lose by hiring me before I got to this point.
